INSTITUTIONAL OBJECTIVES

EXPECTED COMPETENCIES OF THE BNSC GRADUATE

By the end of the BNSc programme, the student is expected to be able to:

• Integrate concepts and principles from the biological, social, and physical science into nursing in the provision of comprehensive nursing care to individuals, families, groups and communities.
• Function effectively, independently and in collaboration with other members of the health care team and related sectors in the care of individuals and group in the community and health care institution.
• Utilize theories and concepts of nursing (e.g nursing process) another tools of nursing in assisting individuals, families groups to adapt to changing health needs.
• Formulate theoretical framework that are applicable to nursing, care of clients at all levels of health care by using tenets from relevant sciences.
• Incorporate the medical plan of care into nursing activities to achieve the objective of the dependent, inter-dependent and independent function of the nurse in a multi-disciplinary setting.
• Contribute to the improvement of nursing practice by participating in interdisciplinary research, utilizing and publishing the research findings as for evidence based in nursing practice.
• Appreciate the influence of culture on the health status of clients and utilize this knowledge in planning nursing intervention.
• Utilize the principles of management in the administration of health care resources.

REGULATIONS FOR THE BACHELOR OF NURSING SCIENCE (BNSc) DEGREE PROGRAMME

1.) Degree in View
Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc)

2.) Duration of the Course
Five-year program for candidates who has completed senior secondary school examination and passed at credit level. (see admission requirement) and the University Matriculation Unified Tertiary Matriculation (UTME) and Four year program for direct entry students as specified under admission requirement.

3a) Admission into 100 levels BNSc. Programme:

Candidates may be considered for admission to 100 level BNSc. degree programme after passing the University Examination of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) and the university screening examination or any other examination as prescribed by the university authority. They are also to obtain a minimum of credit in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO) or its approved equivalent at Credit Level in at least five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics in not more than two sittings.

3b) Direct Entry Requirements into 4 years BNSc. Programme

• Candidate must satisfy the prescribed minimum requirements for admission, except UTME requirement into the degree programmes of the Bachelor of Nursing Science.
• In addition to the above candidates must possess a Registered Nurse Certificate registrable with Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
• Candidates with relevant score in General Certificate of Education “Advance Level” or approved equivalent plus credit pass in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and Senior Secondary School Certificate or its Equivalent.
• Candidates with first degree in health-related disciplines with not less than Second Class Upper.
• Candidate transferring from other science department/faculty of Christopher University or other Universities based on:
  i.) A CGPA of not less than 4.0 units
  ii.) Vacancies within the department.
  iii.) Satisfy the university conditions for transfer

COURSE CONTENT SPECIFICATIONS/SYLLABUS OF ALL COURSES IN THE PROGRAM/SUB-DISCIPLINE/DISCIPLINE:

1.) A programme of study shall be provided leading to the award of Bachelor’s degree to be denoted by letters BNSc. which shall be awarded as unclassified with Distinction, Merit, Credit and Pass degree.
2.) Instruction shall be by courses, both within and outside the Department. Candidates will be required to register for a combination of courses as recommended by the Board of the Faculty and approved by the Senate of Christopher University.
3.) Courses shall be evaluated in terms of course units.
4.) There shall be five levels of course number 101-199; 201-299; 301-399; 401-499; 501-599. The letter shall prefix course numbers e.g., NSC.
5.) The normal number of semesters for the award of the degree shall be ten. The maximum allowable number of semesters for the award of pass degree shall be fifteen. Those who fail to complete within that period shall be asked to withdraw.
6.) The following terminologies are used to denote categories of courses in the programme.
– Compulsory: A course that must be taken and passed at a minimum of 50%.
– Required: A course that must be taken and passed at a minimum of 40%.
– Elective: A course that can be taken in order to enrich and increase students’ total units.
– Pre-requisite: A course that must be taken and passed before another specific course. For Nursing courses, a minimum score of 50% in a pre-requisite course for a second semester course, will enable the student to take the second semester course.
– Concurrent: A course that must be taken together with another specified course.
– Core Courses: They are fundamental to the BNSc program, Nursing programme and they are: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Epidemiology, Health Education/Promotion and Community/Public Health Nursing. All nursing courses are also core courses.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND STRUCTURE

A Programme of study shall be provided leading to the award of bachelor’s degree to be denoted by letters BNSc. Shall be awarded with honours or as a pass degree. Instruction shall be by courses, both within and outside the department and exposure to clinical experience including industrial training (IT) programme. Candidate will be required to register for a combination of courses as recommended by the Academic Board of the faculty and as approved by the senate of the University.

• All courses taught during a semester shall be examined at the end of that semester.
• The total number of units taken along with the grades obtained in each course shall be recorded for the purposes of calculating the Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA)
• Continuous assessment shall constitute 30% of the final grade in each course taught in the Department and it is compulsory.
• The total course unit for the session shall not exceed 50 units.
• Promotion/ Progression to upper level shall be based on the following:
  (i) Continuous Assessment (C.A)
  (ii) The specified papers and oral examination.
  (iii) Obtaining a minimum of 75% attendance in class and clinical placement will qualify the students to sit for examination.

• Candidates shall be required to register for not less than 20 units and not more than 25 units per semester. The minimum number of course unit for the award of degree shall be 200.
• Candidates shall be required to pass all the courses of the University’s General Studies Program.
• All clinical postings are compulsory and clinical examinations must be passed at 50% at each level before the award of the degree. Clinical examinations shall be taken at the end of the semester of each level.
